Lil Wayne Hospitalized In Los Angeles After Suffering From Multiple Seizures

March 14, 2013 in Featured News by J-SLY

Lil Wayne suffers from yet another seizure, this time while wrapping filming for a music video in Los Angeles.

Celebrity gossip site TMZ reports that Young Money rapper Lil Wayne was hospitalized on Tuesday, March 12th after suffering from multiple seizures. The seizures happened shortly after Lil Wayne wrapped shooting for a music video in Los Angeles, he was then taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The Young Money helmsman was eventually released from the hospital and is said to be doing okay.

Although a serious health scare, Tuesday’s incident isn’t the only time Lil Wayne has suffered from one or more seizures. Back in October, a private jet Lil Wayne was flying on was forced to make an emergency stop after the rapper began exhibiting “seizure-like” symptoms.

The “seizure-like” symptoms were reportedly caused by a severe migraine and dehydration. Following the incident, Lil Wayne was prescribed seizure medication and was also asked by a doctor to drink at least four bottles of water per day.

Neither Lil Wayne nor a rep for the rapper has responded to news of his latest seizure.

Lil’ Kim reflects on losing The Notorious B.I.G., 16 years later.

During her rounds at MTV’s “RapFix Live,” Lil’ Kim fielded a tough question from fellow rapper Bun B.

Bun asked Kim, “How was it dealing with the loss of Biggie for you in this industry?”

“Bun B, that’s a very tough question because it took me so long — super long to deal with the loss of a person who was such a huge impact in my life,” said Kim of The Notorious B.I.G.’s death on March 9, 1997.

Kim revealed that, for the first time, she will celebrate on the anniversary of Big’s death at club Glazz in Queens, New York.

“That’s my first event ever on March 9 because I used to get offered events a lot and I said ‘no,’ ” she explained. “I never celebrate that day. It’s so funny because I can always feel when that day is approaching. I get so depressed. I get so sad. It happens before March, in February. I can feel it coming and I used to all say ‘no.’

“So to answer Bun B, I’m just now getting over that fact, and it’s how many years later,” she said.

Two Men Charged In Inaugural Performer’s Chicago Shooting Death

February 12, 2013 in Featured News by J-SLY

CHICAGO (CNN) — The teenager who police say shot and killed Chicago honor student Hadiya Pendleton was on probation for unlawful use of a firearm, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Monday night.

Michael Ward, 18, and Kenneth Williams, 20, were each charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder, McCarthy told reporters. They were also charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

They will make their first appearance in court on Tuesday morning.
Ward confessed to shooting Hadiya and two others in late January in a case of mistaken identity, McCarthy said.

Police said Ward and Williams were gang members seeking revenge against the people who had shot Williams in July — men against whom Williams had refused to press charges when police arrested them.

He and Ward thought they had spotted members of a rival gang at the park when police said Ward sneaked up on Hadiya and her friends and began shooting. Williams was the getaway driver, the superintendent said.

McCarthy said Ward was sentenced to two years’ probation in January 2012 for unlawful use of a firearm.

“This has to stop. Gun offenders have to do significant jail time,” McCarthy said. “Criminals have to be held accountable. And there has to be a certainty of punishment when we arrest somebody with an illegal firearm.”

The charges come 12 days after Hadiya was shot to death at a park in what her godfather, Damon Stuart, described as an “ideal community” on Chicago’s South Side.

Police said that there were no substantive tips as to the shooter’s identity, but once they had a description of the car, they linked it to a traffic stop that occurred several days before the killing.

That description and interviews with parolees led them to Ward and Williams. McCarthy said Ward surrendered on Saturday night without a struggle, but Williams tried to escape. No weapon was recovered, he said.

Hadiya’s was killed a week after she performed at one of the events surrounding Obama’s second inauguration. Shatira Wilks, one of Hadiya’s cousins, said the family was elated that the suspects were in jail.

“However there is no level of comfort — not long-term comfort — and we are still miserable,” she told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “(Hadiya) is the face of every parent’s dream child. Hadiya had so many different things awaiting her in life. She was a wonderful, wonderful kid. My little cousin really was an angel.”

She said Hadiya was hanging out with a volleyball team — a group of girls and one boy — when she was killed. The killing — which occurred in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood near the Obamas’ Chicago home — drew the first couple’s attention.

First lady Michelle Obama attended Hadiya’s funeral Saturday, and her husband wrote a note to Hadiya’s family that was printed on the funeral program: “We know that no words from us can soothe the pain, but rest assured that we are praying for you, and that we will continue to work as hard as we can to end this senseless violence.”

Hadiya’s parents are in Washington to attend the State of the Union address, McCarthy said. Hadiya, who often urged friends to stay away from gangs, was an honor student and band majorette at King College Prep School.

Her slaying — the 42nd in the city this year — also highlighted the problem of gun violence in Chicago. More than 500 people were fatally shot in 2012. McCarthy reiterated his call for minimum sentences for gun crimes and mandatory background checks.

“Michael Ward would not have been on the street of New York City to commit this act,” the impassioned superintendent said. “This is not about gun control. This is about the criminal justice system being designed to prevent gun violence.”

Huge gaps in that system must be closed, he said, mentioning sentencing guidelines and universal background checks for gun buyers.

“But in my book, one of the bigger things is (a) requirement to report the loss, theft or transfer of firearms,” he said.

He hoped Hadiya’s case would be a turning point in the gun laws debate, and he apologized for his rant.

“I get a little emotional,” he said. “Because it’s true.”

Rick Ross Shooting: Chicago Gang to Blame?

January 29, 2013 in Featured News by J-SLY

As the mystery remains in rapper Rick Ross‘ failed assassination attempt yesterday in Fort Lauderdale, it’s clear that Ross had a few enemies — including a Chicago-based gang whose members threatened the chubby singer’s life through online videos!

The gang, Gangster Disciples, is angry with Ross for his using some of its symbols and logos in his music videos and CDs without paying them for it!

Crude footage of alleged gang members threatening Ross have surfaced in social media.

Some show ferocious-looking dudes telling former Miami-Dade County corrections officer Ross that if he doesn’t pay up, he’ll be killed.

Check out one of the videos:

Ross actually cancelled several shows in December because of the threats.

The Gangster Disciples, or GDs, were founded in the late 1960s on the tough south side of the city and dabbled in civil rights politics before moving to criminal activities.

Ross, 37, and his girlfriend, Davie stylist Shateria Moragne-El, were the victims of a drive-by shooting early Monday morning in Fort Lauderdale.

The rapper crashed his Rolls-Royce into an apartment building after being sprayed with gunfire as he drove home through downtown Fort Lauderdale. Neither Ross nor his galpal were injured and quickly went into hiding.

Police, who are not commenting, are currently shifting through hours of surveillance tapes outside stores on the fancy Las Olas shopping district, where the gunfire erupted.

Gunfire triggers rapper Rick Ross crash, police say

January 28, 2013 in Featured News by J-SLY

“Teflon Don” rapper Rick Ross crashed his silver Rolls Royce into an apartment building after he heard gunfire along a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, street Monday morning, police said.

“The driver of the Rolls Royce attempted to drive away from the direction of the shots being fired and lost control of the vehicle, striking a nearby apartment building,” Fort Lauderdale Police Detective DeAnna Garcia said.

Ross and a female passenger were not hurt by the wreck or the gunshots, Garcia said.

“The suspects fled from the area prior to police arrival,” she said.

The incident, however, called attention to threats against the artist’s life made in a street gang’s videos and posted online in recent months.

“We’re pulling up on you,” a man who identified himself as a member of the Gangster Disciples warned in one of the videos. “Whatever city, whatever state, the pressure on.”

Several videos purporting to be from Gangster Disciple members in several states — including Georgia, North Carolina and Florida — appeared on YouTube late last year demanding that Ross pay a fee to them for his use of the Star of David, which they claim as a gang symbol, and a reference to one of their founders in his music and marketing.

“You got to cut the check,” one video said. “Tell your boss man he got to get that check, or all you in trouble.”

“We need that cash right now,” another said.

Ross, 37, whose albums include “Teflon Don” in 2010 and “Deeper Than Rap” a year earlier, told south Florida radio station 99 Jamz last month that he was not intimidated by the threats.

“Ain’t never no checks getting cut,” he said. “I don’t play those games. I consider that extortion.”

Is Nas hip-hop’s finest MC?

Ross did cancel his North Carolina shows last month just days after a video appeared online threatening his life if he performed there.

“Never was it due to any threats,” he told the radio station. Instead, he canceled because “the promoter wasn’t really handling his business.”

Ross wanted to make certain that listeners understood he was not frightened. “Don’t ever get it twisted, Ricky Ross is the boss,” he said.

The death threats are not the only challenge to Ross. A former drug lord and gang leader is suing in a Los Angeles court, accusing him of stealing his name and reputation.

“The reality is I want justice done,” the original Ross wrote in an e-mail to CNN. “I know that he took his name and image from my life and believe he is unfairly profiting off my story.”

Ricky “Freeway” Ross was serving a prison sentence a decade ago when rapper William Roberts, who previously worked as a Florida correctional officer, adopted “Rick Ross” as his stage name, according to the lawsuit.

“This rapper and his labels clearly knew of my name and story, and have tried to suck out the lifeblood without license,” the former drug lord said. “I have my own use for my intellectual property and did not need this confusion created.”

More recently, the rapper has been using the name “Ricky Rozay.”

The rapper and his record label have not responded to CNN’s request for comment.

Despite the death threats and legal issues, his music is doing well. Ross is nominated for a best rap album Grammy for his latest release, “God Forgives, I Don’t.”

The Hip Hop Week In Review: Lupe Fiasco Booted Offstage, Game Doesn’t Think “Detox” Will Release

January 27, 2013 in Featured News by J-SLY

Lupe Fiasco’s show was cut short following anti-Obama statements, while Game shared his thoughts on Dr. Dre’s “Detox.” Chief Keef’s Interscope deal is reportedly worth $6 million.

This week, Lupe Fiasco caused quite a stir with aperformance at Hamilton Live in Washington, D.C., rapping comments that criticized President Barack Obamaand causing security to shut down the performance early. Meanwhile, Game shared this thoughts on Dr. Dre’s elusive Detox, stating that it will never come out. His manager also said that he was trying to iron out a G-Unitreunion. Finally, even though Chief Keef is locked upserving a 60-day sentence, details of his contract with Interscope Records were released, showing that the young rapper could make more than $6 million as part of the deal.

Lupe Fiasco Kicked Offstage At Pre-Inauguration Concert For Criticizing President Barack Obama

Lupe Fiasco picked the wrong time and place to reinstate his feelings about President Barack Obama. Lu, who called the POTUS the “biggest terrorist” in June 2011, appeared at a pre-inauguration concert this past Sunday to perform cuts from his oeuvre. He reportedly ripped into an anti-Obama track that lasted for 30 minutes, making it known that he did not vote for Obama during the November election. Security stepped in and asked the controversial rapper to move on to the next song, a request that he refused to honor. As a consequence, security cut the show short and ushered him offstage. The Chicago, Illinois native, who recently canceled his album Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Part 2, is yet to break his silence on the matter. Watch the video of the incident below.

Game Says Dr. Dre Will “Never” Release Detox, Entertains G-Unit Reunion

Game has been working closely with Dr. Dre on his elusive album Detox since the onset of his career, but he doesn’t think it will ever drop. Chuck Taylor gave an interview this week where he compared the album to Jesus, stating, “Will you ever get to see Jesus? It’s like a Hip Hop Jesus.” He said that even though the Doctor dropped a few singles over the past couple of years, he doesn’t think he’ll release it unless he’s completely satisfied. “If he doesn’t become 100 percent happy, then we’ll probably never end up hearing Detox. I’ll say never.” His manager, Dontay “Taydoe” Kidd, also gave an interview this week where he revealed that he has been working with the Compton, California native and 50 Cent to reunite G-Unit. While nothing is finalized, he said that the decision would be a “business” move.

Chief Keef’s Interscope Deal Could Be Worth $6 Million

Last year, Chief Keef signed to Interscope Records after fielding a bidding war between some of the music industry’s biggest imprints. Earlier this week, documents were revealed that showed that the rapper, who was recently served a 60-day sentence for violating his probation, inked a deal that could amount to more than $6 million. The papers claim that he signed a three-album deal that included a $440,000 advance; $300,000 to record his debut Finally Rich; $440,000 for his label Glory Boyz Entertainment; and $200,000 for “overhead expenses” for the label. Additionally, Keef faced some strife this week after an alleged middle schooler sued him for an undisclosed sum of child support – a legal problem that could land him behind bars for a year. Finally, an old interview taken from his album’s promotional run saw the “I Don’t Like” spitter discussing how 50 Cent isn’t his mentor.
